Both 3003 aluminum and 5052 aluminum are known for their excellent formability and corrosion resistance. However, there are certain differences between them. This blog post will take you to understand the specific differences between these two aluminum alloys so that you can better choose them.

3003 aluminum alloy:

3003 aluminum alloy is an AL-Mn alloy and is the most widely used anti-rust aluminum. Its chemical composition is AL-Mn alloy, with a manganese content of 1.0-1.5% and an aluminum content of 98.0-99.5%. This alloy has high plasticity, corrosion resistance and weldability. But it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, so cold working method is used to improve its mechanical properties: it has high plasticity in the annealed state, good plasticity during semi-cold work hardening, and the plasticity decreases after cold work hardening.

5052 aluminum alloy:

5052 aluminum alloy is an AL-Mg alloy with a magnesium content of between 3-5%, which also makes it have good corrosion resistance and corrosion resistance. The properties of this alloy include good formability, corrosion resistance and weldability, as well as moderate strength. In addition, it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, but its plasticity is better during semi-cold work hardening, while its plasticity will decrease after cold work hardening.

In addition, according to different specifications, 5052 aluminum alloy can be divided into 5052 thin plate, 5052 medium and thick plate, 5052 thick plate and other types. At the same time, according to different states, it can be further classified into 5052-O aluminum plate, 5052-H112 aluminum plate, 5052-H32 aluminum plate, and 5052-H34 aluminum plate.

The difference between 3003 aluminum alloy and 5052 aluminum alloy:

Ⅰ Product appearance requirements:

  • 3003 aluminum alloy is mainly used in areas where product appearance requirements are not high, such as aluminum products, thermal insulation materials, building decoration, etc.
  • 5052 aluminum alloy is used in areas with high appearance requirements, such as automobiles, aircraft, ships, etc.

Ⅱ Thickness:

  • 3003 aluminum alloy is mainly in the form of thin plates, while thick plates are relatively rarely used.
  • In addition to the widespread use of thin plates, 5052 aluminum alloy is also commonly used in thick plates.

Ⅲ Price:

  • The price of 5052 aluminum alloy is usually higher than that of 3003 aluminum alloy because of their different chemical compositions, mechanical properties, uses and surface treatments.

Ⅳ Mechanical behavior:

  • The strength and hardness of 5052 aluminum alloy are higher than that of 3003 aluminum alloy, and it has better plasticity and toughness, which makes it better adaptable to complex processing processes.

Ⅴ Surface treatment:

  • Due to differences in their chemical composition and mechanical properties, the surface treatments of the two aluminum plates are also different. The surface of 5052 aluminum alloy is usually treated by processes such as anodizing or sandblasting, while the surface of 3003 aluminum alloy mainly uses processes such as mechanical polishing or chemical washing.

Ⅵ Application Environment:

  • 3003 aluminum alloy is mainly used in humid environments, such as product packaging, refrigerators, air conditioners, cold storages, ventilation ducts, etc.
  • 5052 aluminum alloy is commonly used in electrical casings, transportation vehicles, pressure vessels and other fields. It is also a common material for manufacturing automobile and aircraft fuel tanks and oil pipes.
