Type 304/304L stainless steel (sometimes referred to as 18-8) combines excellent resistance to many corrosive environments with mechanical properties similar to most structural steels. It is nonmagnetic in the annealed state and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Its strength can be increased by cold working. When welding is required, Type 304/304L or the low carbon version (0.03 max) 304/304L should be used.
