6061 aluminum is the most versatile heat treatable aluminum alloy. It has excellent corrosion resistance and good formability. Its strength is equivalent to mild steel, making it a very popular general-purpose alloy. It can be hardened by heat treatment. Among other good qualities, 6061 aluminum sheets can be anodized, giving them an extra layer of protection and providing the opportunity for color customization. On the other hand, it doesn't bend or shape easily. Aluminum 6061 has a density of 2.7 g/cc (metric) or 0.0975 lb/in³ (imperial).

Introduction

6061 alloy aluminum sheet is the most versatile heat-treatable aluminum alloy. While not as strong as most 2xxx and 7xxx alloys, 6061 aluminum has a wide range of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance and can be fabricated by many common practices. Alloy 6061 has good formability in the “O” temper or annealed condition. In the T4 condition, fairly severe forming is possible; while in the T6 condition, the properties can be obtained by artificial aging.
